Many Americans have questions about the use of biotech seeds and USFRA believes they should have the entire story, not just one side.

There are many scientific studies that have shown that genetically modified foods are safe and have several advantages.

Iowa State University

“Genetic modification of plants has the potential to be one of the most environmentally helpful discoveries ever.  GM technology has produced new methods of insect control that reduce chemical insecticide application by 50% or more.” http://www.econ.iastate.edu/sites/default/files/publications/papers/p11835-2010-08-10.pdf

Purdue University

“This is nowhere more evident than in the debate over the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in agricultural production which has constrained the adoption of yield-increasing technologies in many parts of the world (Paarlberg 2008).” http://www.agecon.purdue.edu/files/Hertel_AAEA_Presidential_Addresss-Short%20Version.pdf

National Academies

“Farmers who have adopted GE crops have experienced lower costs of production and obtained higher yields…”

“Many farmers have benefited... by using lower amounts of or less expensive insecticide applications, particularly where insect pest populations were high and difficult to treat before the advent of Bt crops.”

USDA NASS

“Yields have increased 36 percent since 1995, the last year before biotech varieties were commercially planted. Looking at U.S. soybean acreage in particular, nearly 92 percent of U.S. soybean acreage is now planted with biotech varieties and soybean yields have increased 12 percent since 1995.” http://www.soyconnection.com/health_nutrition/health_biotechnology/ask_the_expert.php

It is pretty common for Americans to hear conflicting reports or studies about their food and it can be confusing. However, there have been no studies that show GMOs are unsafe. Some of our farmers choose not to use biotech seeds. Other farmers have been using them for many years with great success to maintain and avoid yield losses that could greatly impact the world’s food supply. Farmers who have experience with biotech seeds should post their stories in this video channel’s comments section found here.

It's Been Said:

A video posted by MediaRoots.org implies that corn made from biotech seeds affects the human nervous system and that while biotech seeds were developed to help farmers improve crop yields, there is “research proving” otherwise. Among several claims, the video states, “The hope was that this biotechnology would end world hunger by creating higher crop yields. Ironically, we have found studies that indicate just the opposite. Reports have shown that genetically modified crops actually produce fewer yields.”
