Janice and her husband Jake were both raised on beef/grain farms in Ohio. They built a house on the farm and wanting something of their own, bought a feed yard in central Nebraska. Janice taught Agriculture and Welding in Nebraska and Jake operated the feed yard before moving back to eastern Ohio to buy and run cows.
“Jake and I are constantly looking for ways to improve personally and work with other people to improve our sustainability. Jake and I receive a lot of advice, knowledge and direction from people operating and managing their own businesses. Currently Jake and I are embarking on the largest best management practice in our lives. We are working with NRCS to build a new and more current manure handling facility. The project will cost more than any one purchase we have ever made. This will improve the feed yard’s overall financial worth, environmental sustainability and eventually the amount of cattle fed.”
How I’ve Told My Story:
“I have had conversations about Agriculture in teachers’ lounges, airplanes, doctor’s offices, bars, family activities and school parking lots. I am an active ‘ag’vocate on Facebook. I am in the process of creating a comfortable place to create a conversation about Agriculture with an emphasis on the beef industry through my blog, www.fortheloveofbeef.blogspot.com. I started blogging in November and really enjoy blogging nearly every evening. People often ask ‘why blog’? I really enjoy writing a blog about agriculture and our family that is relatable to others and will put a smile on the reader’s face.”
